What Is Endometriosis:
Endometriosis is estimated to affect 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. If you are one of them I want to help!
Endometriosis is a disorder, that is often painful, where tissue that normally exclusively lines the inside of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows in places outside of the uterus. Typically the endometrium that migrates starts to grow on the surrounding structures- the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining of the pelvis.
The endometrium is the tissue that normally thickens in the first part of the menstrual cycle, then, if an egg is not implanted it is shed out with a person’s monthly menses. This tissue behaves the same way with your monthly cycle regardless of where it is in your body. Therefore, if you have endometrium growing on your ovaries but the body has no way of shedding it when it is time to do so then this tissue can form into cysts called endometriomas. These cysts can irritate the surrounding areas and create scar tissue and adhesions, potentially causing pelvic tissues to stick to other organs, discomfort and/or pain.
