What is Castor Oil and Why Would You Want to Use It?
Castor Oil comes from the castor seed which is high in ricinoleic acid which has been credited for the oils multiple health benefits including. These benefits include stimulating lymph function, detoxifying liver support, skin clearing properties, promoting healing, reducing inflammation and constipation, supporting uterine issues, and encouraging better sleep and increasing energy levels. A healthy lymphatic and digestive system, healthy liver function, proper sleep and low levels of inflammation can all help optimize conditions in the body in preparation for pregnancy. I would not encourage the use of castor oil packs while pregnant because we do not want to detoxify the liver only to deposit the toxins into the growing baby.
Supplies You Will Need:
White wool or cotton flannel large enough to cover the entire treated area. It should be washed and left to dry naturally before use. It will be folded several times to make it a large flat pad. 4 oz of cold pressed castor oil
Heating pad or hot water bottle
1 box of Saran wrap or some kind of plastic wrap.
1 small pot
1 small glass container
Baking soda
Procedure:
1. Put the 4oz of cold pressed castor oil in a glass container and set that container in a small pot of hot water to warm the oil.
2. Turn on your heating pad or heat up a hot water bottle.
3. Soak the flannel in castor oil so that it is saturated, but not dripping. Fold the cloth in 2-3 layers.
4. Place the warm oil side on the body, wrap the plastic wrap around the body in order to hold the pack in place. Wrap a blanket or towel around that section and then place the heating pad or hot water bottle on top.
5. Rest like this for 1-2 hours or as directed by a practitioner.
6. Afterward you can put the oilcloth in a plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator. Each pack may be used up to 25-30 times or until the oil smells rancid.
7. Repeat the procedure as recommended by your health practitioner.
Important Notes:
Castor Oil will stain clothes, sheets, etc. so be aware and don’t let the oil come into contact with anything you don’t want to be stained.
Baking soda will remove excess oil from your skin.
You may see a brown discharge from the affected area or a whitish or blood tinged discharge from the vagina. This can occur days or even weeks after these hot oil packs so do not be overly alarmed. However, if you are unsure about certain discharge do not hesitate to contact your practitioner and ask their opinion.
